Fun, festive activities for all ages abound in Oldham County, KY for the holidays. From crafting your own fascinator to creating a wreath from natural materials to viewing dazzling light and décor displays that make the season come alive, Oldham County has it all! Unique ways to explore the holidays include:

 

Light Up the Park
Sunday, November 28, 5 – 7 p.m.
Free! 

Holiday events will kick off in Oldham County with this first time event. Visit The Maples Park as the Deibel Barn and Tree will be illuminated with thousands of twinkling lights for the holiday season. Help with the countdown as the excitement grows to turn the lights on! Attendees can decorate festive holiday ornaments for free in the Deibel Barn, courtesy of Oldham County Public Library, to take home for their own tree or to hang on the park tree. The Light Up Ceremony Countdown takes place at 6 p.m. with caroling, cookies and cocoa courtesy of Crestwood Methodist Church.

 

Wine & Workshops:  Holiday Speed Fascinator Workshop
Wednesday, December 1, 6 p.m. – 8 p.m.
$55 per person. Reservations required.

Let this adult workshop bring out your creative side! This is the perfect class for beginners. Learn from Jenny Pfanenstiel, Master Milliner and Featured Milliner of the 147th Kentucky Derby. Jenny will show you how to create the perfect holiday fascinator in this 2 hour Speed Hat Making Workshop as she demonstrates how to manipulate materials into beautiful and unique creations. All materials provided. Each attendee also receives 10% off any items purchased within the Judith M Millinery Supply House in La Grange, if additional decorative items are needed. Workshop begins with a tour of the Supply House. Wine provided.

 

Kids Holiday Hat Workshop
Saturday, December 4, 11 a.m. – 4 p.m. (come and go)
Cost is $20 per person suggested donation. Proceeds will go towards the Humane Society of Oldham County.

Kids will be able to express their creative side in this workshop for beginners and all ages. Join the staff of Judith M Millinery Supply House as they get ready for the holidays by decorating your own Santa hat. Let your imagination soar with endless possibilities. Limit 1 hat per person. All materials included.

 

 

Holiday Designer Show House at Chestnut Hall
December 3 – 11
Touring hours are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. daily except on Sunday when the hours are 12:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.
Tickets are $20 per person in advance or $25 at the door.



Make plans now to tour the beautiful TRF Sanctuary Farm at Chestnut Hall in Prospect, KY for some bright and merry holiday cheer featuring a Holiday Designer Show House. This historic farmhouse will be grandly decorated inside and out with exquisite decor in rooms designed by Cherry House Furniture, K.P. Designs, Living Spaces by Lyn, Debhelin Designs, Little Mount Lavender, Abbey Custom Interiors, Jason Jennings Designs and All Lit Up. One hundred percent of the proceeds will benefit the Thoroughbred Retirement Foundation, an organization that works to save thoroughbred horses that are no longer able to compete on the track from possible neglect, abuse and slaughter.

 

Yuletide at Yew Dell
Held every Friday – Sunday from November 26 – December 12
Two daily timeslots:  4:30 – 6 p.m. and 6 – 7:30 p.m.


Cost:  Members: Adults $7/Non-Members: $10. Costs same for the following whether members or not:  Seniors & Kids 6-17 $5/ Kids 5 and under free. All tickets are advance sale, no ticket sales at the door.

This annual event never disappoints! This magical event at Yew Dell Botanical Gardens in Crestwood returns and a third weekend has been added due to popular demand! Get in the holiday spirit with the dazzling light and décor displays and enjoy the model train village. Say ‘Hello’ to Santa and hear a story, enjoy snacks, beverages (of both the kid and adult varieties) and other surprises that all combine to make a wonderful family outing. Daily time slots are used to spread out the crowd.

Holiday Wreath Making Workshops
Saturdays, November 27 or December 4
Two daily timeslots:  10 a.m. – 2 p.m. and 2-4 p.m.
Cost:  Members: $55/Non-Members: $65.

A holiday classic at Yew Dell Botanical Gardens! Spend a Saturday morning or afternoon in the gardens making your own holiday wreath with fresh greens collected from the gardens. These workshops fill up fast so register early. No experience needed.

Botany of Christmas
Tuesday, December 7, 6 – 7:30 p.m.
Cost:  Members: $25/Non-Members: $35.

Join Aaron Sexton, University of Louisville PhD Candidate, as he explores the stories and traditions of the plants that make the holidays. From cedars to poinsettias and the yews and hollies that serve as the foundation for Yew Dell Botanical Gardens, plan to see the holidays in a whole new way. After the lecture, stroll through the dazzling Yuletide holiday light display.

 

Light Up La Grange
Saturday, December 4, 7 a.m. – 9 p.m.
Light Up La Grange is FREE, although there may be a cost for some of the food offerings.


This annual favorite, organized by the La Grange KY Main Street Program, returns in historic downtown La Grange, KY. New this year will be the addition of an ice skating rink on the CityPlace lawn and Pavilion 2 will host a Winterfest Market with over 30 vendors. Skating is free and ice skates will be provided onsite. A sampling of the activities include a Family Movie Night the evening before at Southeast Christian Church. Breakfast events beginning at 7 a.m. on Dec. 4 with a Santa Claus Breakfast at Hometown Pizza until 10 a.m. Breakfast with the Grinch will take place from 9 – 11 a.m. at the Oldham County History Center. Admission is $3 per person, or an unwrapped new toy. Free tours will be given at the La Grange Railroad Museum along with cookies and crafts (3 – 5 p.m.), Reindeer Food Making on the Courthouse Lawn, and Choir & Band performances at various times on the CityPlace campus. A Spaghetti Dinner will be held at the La Grange Christian Church as a Youth fundraiser. Santa will arrive at 6 p.m. to flip the switch to light up the town. There will be Photo Ops available in front of the Courthouse lawn with a red truck and tractor, and with Santa & Mrs. Claus at the Dahlgren Pioneer Barn at the History Center from 6:30 – 9 p.m. A Live Nativity will be located at Dairy Queen, provided by Grace Baptist Church.

 

Gatewood Masquerade Ball
Saturday, December 4, 6 p.m. – Midnight
Cost:  $40 and up.

Experience an unforgettable evening at The Gallery at Gatewood to top off Light-Up La Grange! Ticket pricing includes gourmet hors d’oeuvres, dancing and entertainment, open bar, and special guest:  Expert Historian and Celebrity Mixologist…The Victorian Bartender! He will be demonstrating and serving 4 exciting pre-prohibition cocktails:  Smoking Bishop (from Charles Dickins, A Christmas Carol). Absinthe Suisette, 1888 Manhattan, and Brandy Sangaree. Cash bar available 10 p.m. – Midnight. Guests are encouraged to dress in formal/vintage style attire. Award for Best Mask.  Reservations are required and must be 21 or over to attend.

 

Festival of Nativities
December 9 & 10, 5 – 8:30 p.m., December 11, 12 – 6 p.m.

Hosted by the Crestwood Stake of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, the 11th Festival of Nativities celebrates the beauty and diversity of the Christmas Creche. See first-hand over 300 Nativities on display from around the world. Along with nativity scene displays, visitors to the Festival of Nativities can enjoy family photos, cookies, children’s craft, traditional Nacimiento, live nativity, nativity story tours and community concerts all free of charge. Experience a wonderful evening of art and Christmas spirit that will be sure to become part of your annual holiday traditions. Non perishable food items collected for the South Oldham Inter-Church Council Christmas Baskets to benefit those in need.
