Not only is Oldham County home to craft bourbon, 13 Farm Tours, trains on Main Street, the Official Milliner of the Kentucky Derby, and two Underground Railroad sites by the National Park Service, but the county also received a designation as a stop on the Lewis & Clark National Historic Trail in the fall of 2021. Oldham County is the go-to destination for individuals and groups looking for distinctive, memorable attractions. In just the month of March there are 12 events taking place only in Oldham County!   No matter which events tickle your fancy, you’ll certainly want to check out our DEALS before planning your March getaway!

Two events will take place at Judith M Millinery Supply House in La Grange. The first, Wine & Workshops: Speed Fascinator Workshop with Jenny Pfanenstiel, is a two-hour Speed Hat Making Workshop taking place March 5 from 6 – 8 p.m. in which Jenny Pfanenstiel, Master Milliner and Featured Milliner of the 148th Kentucky Derby, will instruct participants on how to create a sculpted horsehair fascinator. Cost is $65 per person. Jenny will be hosting Derby Hats on the Tracks from 2 – 3 p.m. on March 26, featuring 30 milliners from all over the United States. Showcased at this FREE event will be fascinators made by 6 winners (grades 1st-5th) of the Millinery Fashion Award put on by The Kentucky Derby Museums’ Horsing Around with Art event. Each winner made their own fascinator with Pfanenstiel as part of their award!

Yew Dell Botanical Gardens is wrapping up a series of gardening workshops in March with From Plan to Planted – In-Person Workshop on March 5 from 11 a.m.-12:30 p.m. and Planning Your Cut Flower Garden (a virtual workshop) held on March 12 from 12 p.m. – 1:30 p.m. From Plan to Planted is Session 3 of the Designing Your Home Landscape Series. The second workshop will be held in observance of #NationalPlantAFlowerDay. There is a cost for each workshop and reservations must be made in advance. March events at Yew Dell will culminate with 80 Years of Architecture at Yew Dell. This is a celebration of Yew Dells’ 20-year anniversary with an expert-led evening all about architecture. This event will be held on March 15 from 6 – 8 p.m. Cost is $50 – $60 per person.

The Arts Association of Oldham County (AAOOC) will be hosting two exhibits throughout March. Viva Italia will show February 22 – March 12 and transport visitors into local artist’s interpretations of Italy. What’s In Your Garden will be on display March 15 – April 23 and showcase the beauty and creativity each unique garden holds. These exhibits showcase artists from the AAOOC, which owns Gallery 104 in downtown La Grange and hosts many juried fine art exhibits throughout the year.

If you feel like getting out and stretching your legs, you might want to take part in the 17th annual Clover Leaf 5K, sponsored by Oldham County Parks & Rec on March 19 beginning at 8 a.m. This run/walk will start and finish at Briar Hill Park. Early registration is $30; late registration (including day of race) is $40. Prizes are awarded and all participants receive a T-shirt and finish medal.

Spend an enjoyable evening by the tracks in La Grange on Thursday, March 17 from 7 – 11 p.m. at La Grange Live! Open Mic & Karaoke Night at The Gallery at Gatewood.Show off your musical talent or just to have fun with friends! This monthly event is held in partnership with Brian Rea of Trackside Karaoke. Free admission/cash bar. Must be 21 or over.

Take part in a Bourbon Tasting at Barn6 or take an after-dinner stroll along the ArtWalk at Hermitage Farm in Goshen, KY. Book a Custom Tasting Experience and gain special access to the recently unveiled Barn6, an authentic thoroughbred barn, opened to the public for special events and for those who just want to sip and talk bourbon. Experience ArtWalk below the gardens and among the trees beside Little Sinking Creek, where you can stroll along over 1,500 feet of boardwalk. Live video projections and coordinated soundscape accompany visitors on their journey through this immersive art installation. Reservations required.

Top off your visit to Oldham County with a trip to Westport to explore Knock on Wood Country Mercantile & Café. No trip would be complete without food and unique one-of-a-kind shopping experiences, and you can find both at this country store near the Ohio River. The gift shop features a wide variety of home décor and seasonal items, ladies clothing, purses, jewelry and bath products. The Café serves homemade soups, sandwiches, wraps, sides and exceptionally delicious desserts.
